Brand New Box 2017

County of Los Angeles

Along with our partners at AECOM, we started a third phase of this multi-year project. We built a suite of web and iOS tools to assess and manage every publicly-owned property in the County of Los Angeles.

    In 2017:
  • Costs and spending on management of 45,306,068 square feet of buildings now forecasted 50+ years in the future.
  • We transitioned the platform to an internal data center
  • We added Parking Lot assessments
  • We created the world's most accurate Pavement Condition Index (seriously)

  • Launched Cart Recovery emails - adding a significant revenue bump
  • Redesigned and modernized the checkout user experience
  • Built a new layouts feature for complete customization of store designs

The Institute

We designed, built and launched the Institute for Family Support Professionals this year - a national co-op of online training for home visitors.

The whole project ran in 2017:
  • Custom learning maps
  • Dozens of online training modules
  • Users can share their progress with supervisors or colleagues

Digital Badges

We built a new platform for CPPR to design and administer digital badges - a new badging platform that conforms to the Open Badge spec. It's like an online version of our annual Badge of Merit, but with evidence attached!

But Wait, There's More

There are really more projects than you've got the patience to read about. Here's the short list:

  • US Army Corps of Engineers: a small site to promote drought resiliency projects
  • City of Mountain Village, CO public engagement site for new town planning

Staff Growth

We really do think of everyone as a teammate, despite how corny this sounds. This year we had some fresh faces join in.

Final Fridays

Every month we do something fun to celebrate what we've accomplished - and get away from our screens for a bit. A few highlights from 2017:

Lock Picking

We taught ourselves the basics of lock-picking, and now we all have our own toolkits.

New Brewery

After months of construction, the brewery next door opened. Cheers!

3D Printing

We bought a 3D printer, and have melted a ton of plastic.

Paintball

We got our asses handed to us by a bunch of junior high kids.

Axe Throwing

A friend opened a new axe-throwing alley. It is just as fun as you'd expect.

Golf

None of us can golf. But that doesn't stop us trying!

Oh yeah, and Iceland!

To celebrate being in business for the last ten (really, 10!) years, we put all our work on pause and went to Iceland for a week with our families. It was awesome.

  • We ate exotic northern foods!
  • We watched the northern lights!
  • We spent a lot of time swimming in warm water: lagoons and lagoons and lagoons, hot tubs and pools, all heated by the fires of the earth!
  • We petted Icelandic horses!
  • We embarassed ourselves trying to pronounce Icelandic!
  • We walked in between continents!
  • We saw lots of snow and ice and moss and rock!
  • We marveled at fjords and volcanoes and black sand beaches and glaciers and icebergs and geysirs and waterfalls!

This was an amazing trip, and a very memorable way to celebrate the first decade of Brand New Box.

Thank you.

If you're reading this far, you're in the elite few - thanks so much for working with us this last year. Here's to new territory in 2018!
